A GLASGOW band will join forces with Scotland's national orchestra to celebrate a new £21million hospice.

Belle and Sebastian and the RSNO will take to the stage at the Royal Concert Hall this Friday at 7pm for a special concert which is part of the continuing campaign to raise funds to support Glasgow’s Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

The Brick by Brick appeal to raise funds to create a new purpose-built facility on a 7.5 acre green site in Bellahouston Park, on land gifted by Glasgow City Council, was launched in 2012.

The centre, which will open later this year, will lead the way in palliative care, offering support to 1200 new patients and families every year in a purpose-built building.

All the profits from Friday’s event, which will see Belle and Sebastian and the RSNO collaborate on some of the band’s best known songs, will go to support the Hospice.

Rhona Baillie, chief executive of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, said: “We’ve been genuinely overwhelmed by the support shown by all our donors. The generosity of people across Glasgow, as well as the rest of the UK and abroad, has been amazing.

“As ambassadors for the Hospice, Belle and Sebastian have been long-term supporters of our appeal. We’re enormously grateful for their continued support and that of the RSNO, DF Concerts and the team at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.

“The cost of looking after patients, their carers, and their families, is £5m a year, with only £1.9m coming from the National Health Service. In order to keep the Hospice doors open, and look after those who need our support, we need to raise the remaining £3.1m shortfall. At this special event, we’re asking the people of Glasgow to stay with us on this journey and help us to provide the best care possible for our patients and families.”

Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of Belle and Sebastian, added: “We're going to have a party with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on Friday to celebrate this achievement - we will dig up some older tunes, there will be dancing! And all the money we raise will go to the Hospice naturally, because it's not going to run itself.”

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster, with prices starting at £34.70.
