The cause of a fire which destroyed a pavillion in Renfrew remains unknown.

Firefighters well called to the scene in Robbie Park around 10.27pm on Friday after the blaze took hold.

It took four crews using an aerial appliance and hose reel jet to contain the flames.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they were also dealing with suspected asbestos.

A spokeswoman for the service said the cause of the incident is 'unknown' while Police Scotland said no crime had been detected.

Gavin Newlands SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North visited the site the morning after and described it as 'a burnt out shell'.

He said: "Went to see the damage caused by last night's fire at the Robertson Park pavillion.

"Sad to say the building is a totally burnt out shell.

"I hope the thoughtless morons who did this are proud of themselves as the pavillion will now undoubtedly require to be demolished."

Fire raising attempts are said to have been an ongoing issue in the area.

The MP added that the pavillion had been the focus of the police and wardens but their efforts had been 'unsuccessful'.
