A CHIMNEY coping stone has fallen from the roof of flats following months of residents' safety complaints.

Locals said they had a "lucky escape" as the large piece of heavy concrete plunged into gardens below.

It is the latest in a series of building blunders in the beleaguered Toryglen community.

Two years of complaints from residents has, the Evening Times revealed last month, led to a management team being parachuted in to take over Thistle Housing Association.

Residents have raised concerns over the past 18 months about the quality of work carried out, in particular work to chimneys in the area.

David Crockwell, who is a builder to trade, has repeatedly complained that workmen he saw replacing the chimneys during works at 608 homes in Toryglen were not doing the job properly.

He said: "This was only fortunate that it happened at 11.30pm at night, the residents have had a lucky escape.

"We want to know if Thistle will be checking the rest of the chimneys - there must be between 30 and 40."

We told how the Scottish Housing Regulator had found serious governance and financial mismanagement at Thistle HA.

The works were carried out in conjunction with E-ON but the energy giant did not respond to contact from the Evening Times.

A spokeswoman for Thistle Housing Association said: “We are currently working with the contractors involved, HSE and the Building Standards department at Glasgow City Council to investigate the cause of the issue and ensure it is rectified quickly.

“The safety of our residents is our priority and we are regularly updating those affected.

"All necessary costs for repairs will be incurred directly by Thistle Housing Association.”
