AN early-morning road traffic accident on the M74 caused massive tailbacks in the lead up to rush hour.

The alarm was raised at around 6am. Trunk road traffic service Traffic Scotland alerted its Twitter followers of the incident northbound, from junction 5 Raith to junction 4 Maryville, which was closed.

Emergency services were on the scene.

Around half an hour later, Traffic Scotland said the incident had been cleared but that traffic was queueing back to junction 6.

As of 7am, traffic was still heavy in the area but was believed to be easing.

Just before 8am, traffic was also slow in the M77 towards Glasgow, just before junction 4 Crookfur Road  to junction 1 Dumbreck Road.

The M8 around Glasgow also seen congestion at around 8am.

The route affected was the M8 westbound, from junction 9 Easterhouse and junction 11 Stepps to junction 16 Craighall.

Eastbound from junction 28 Glasgow Airport, junction 25 Cardonald and junction 24 Helen Street to junction 19 Anderston was also busy.

The M74 was still congested after 8am.
