A MOBILE phone retailer has announced the closure of its Sauchiehall Street premises.

Vodafone has told customers that their last day on the street will be September 7.

Glasgow Times:

The Telecom giants displayed posters on their windows saying, "Sorry we're closing".

The move comes after we reported on plans for the refurbishment of the nearby Savoy Centre.

Work is set to begin on the 1970s shopping mall with the owners hoping to create 18 new units for independent retailers.

Several retailers have pulled their premises from the iconic street including Irish firm Dunnes Stores in recent years.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said: "We currently have two stores in close proximity to each other – the Sauchiehall Street store and another in Buchanan Street, a ten minute walk away – so this closure makes practical and economic sense.

"All the employees affected will be redeployed to one of the seven other stores we have in Glasgow.

"We continue to invest in our stores across the UK, both in the city and in rural locations."
