Jack and the Beanstalk has nothing on the gardeners who were exhibiting their giant vegetables in the Strathclyde Leek and Onion Show.

The gardening experts put their over-sized veg on display at Cardwell Garden Centre, near Gourock, who hosted the event.

There were a total of 130 entries to the prestigious competition for the green-fingered veg growers.

The show’s overall winner was judged to be Alastair Gray - who travelled all the way from his home in Brechin to take part in the show - displaying an impressive array of onions, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, leeks, cauliflower, and tomatoes.

Visitors to the garden centre marvelled at the displays of enormous onions and colossal carrots among other vegetables, like potatoes, cauliflowers.

Cardwell’s retail general manager, Paul Carmichael said: “Everyone is amazed at how big these gardeners can grow their vegetables and goodness knows how many pots of soup you could make with all the veg that were on display.

“The members of the Strathclyde Leek and Onion Society put an incredible amount of time, care and effort into nurturing their vegetables.”
