He said: "I am all for getting our community spirit back again. It is such a big thing as it can help the whole town rebuild itself.
"I'm so glad that this event has taken place. I can remember the quarry when children there playing and what we are trying to do through this, is bring the community back to the quarry. Make it a place for them to visit again."
The mayor said the quarry was in years gone by a focal point for the residents of Hawcoat and Ormsgill, a place to play and socialise. However, in recent decades it has become a place less frequently visited, a situation Cllr McEwan is eager to change.
