Theresa May's Chequers Plan is a "dead deal and Ex-plan" according to the head of Glasgow University.

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli,Glasgow University Principal, who is also chair of the Fist Minister's standing council on Europe criticised the UK government for its handling of the situation.

Speaking at a Brexit summit in Glasgow, he said: “None of us could have seen the rank incompetence which the UK has taken forward in the negotiations.”

He dismissed the Prime Minister’s Chequers Plan which she is still clinging to as the best hope of a deal and as the only alternative to no deal.

He added: “Chequers is dead it is an ex plan.” He added: “A no deal Brexit remains remains a possibility and it is a scary prospect.”

There is every reason to be afraid of a no deal Brexit” he said very few economies operate as a stand alone.

He said: “The UK crashing out of the EU will a real first in the post 1945 era.”

He said the looming prospect was of a “blind Brexit” adding: “I don’t think blind Brexit is an option for blind optimism.

“It’s like watching a horror movie with your hands over your eyes.It is an economic calamity bearing down on us.”
