Callum McGregor has become something akin to Celtic’s go-to man when it comes to European football.

Of the 33 goals the midfielder has scored for the club, 9 of them have come against European teams. His goal against Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League last term sits high on his favourites list, but however they come the player would welcome taking his tally to double figures on Thursday evening.

Celtic play on-form Salzburg in Austria in their second game of Group B in the Europa League with McGregor itching to leave his calling card.

“I don’t know why I have scored a few in Europe,” said McGregor. “It’s just right place, right time. “I’ve managed to get some goals and maybe it’s because the style is slightly different. The games tend to be more open than in Scotland. Both teams attack more. “There is maybe more chance to find space in the box than I would get in the domestic game. “We more open the game, the more it suits our style of play.” Celtic’s game against Salzburg might be one of their biggest tests this season. The Austrians have not lost a game this season and if that was not sufficient to offer an indication of their current form, their 3-2 win over German side Red Bull Leipzig certainly raised a few eyebrows. “Salzburg have always been a good team but I think everyone was a bit taken aback when they beat Leipzig,” said McGregor. “They are a really top German team so for them to win was something we all took notice of.

“But it’s important we follow those three points up [from Rosenborg win] by trying to get something. Salzburg will be looking to attack as the home team and it has the makings of a good game.”
