CONNOR GOLDSON reckons there are shades of England star Harry Maguire in loan Ranger Joe Worrall as he backs the defender to go from strength to strength at Ibrox.

The stopper made his third appearance for Steven Gerrard’s side in the Europa League victory over Rapid Vienna on Thursday night.

And centre-half partner Goldson has been impressed with how he has settled since making the move from Nottingham Forest.

He said: “He was brilliant and he was brilliant in Villarreal. Obviously the Livingston game we were all below par and he took a bit of criticism, which was unfair.

“He was made a bit of a scapegoat for the game but he bounced back on Thursday and you could see what a player he is. I asked him today how old he is and he said 21.

“I thought he was about 26. He looks and reminds me of Harry Maguire. The way he plays, the way he runs, the shape of him.

“He is very good and he is going to be a top player, you can see that. The way he defends, he is strong, he can move and in the air and on the floor he is good. He is going to be a top player and will be a good player for us.”

Goldson formed an impressive partnership with Nikola Katic in the opening weeks of the campaign but has now played alongside Worrall against Villarreal, Livingston and Vienna.

And the former Brighton defender reckons the competition for places will stand the Light Blues in good stead this season.

Goldson said: “You need that in every position and credit to the gaffer and Mark Allen for the squad they have put together. I came in early in pre-season and there wasn’t the strength in depth we have got now, nowhere near it.

“But now you look at the bench and look at the boys that weren’t in the squad and it is a top, top group. We have got players who can play in every position and we know that you are a bad performance away from losing your shirt.

“That is the pressure you need, especially here at this club. That pressure drives you on to make sure that your performances are good and if everyone does that it is going to make a good team performance.”
