Leigh Griffiths has withdrawn from the Scotland squad for this month's games against Israel and Portugal. The striker, who was overlooked in favour of a starting slot for Stevie Naismith against Albania, released a statement today claiming that he needed to focus on his fitness during the international break. Griffiths was named in Alex McLeish's squad for the Home Nations game against Israel in Haifa on Thursday and the friendly against Portugal but has opted to withdraw himself. The striker, who has scored four international goals in 19 appearances, said in a statement: "I feel that I need to focus on my fitness over this international period and get back into the best possible shape.
"I had a good discussion with the manager to explain my decision.
"It's not one that I've made lightly. It means a lot to me to play for Scotland and I hope to be part of Alex's plans again in future, if selected.
"My aim is to be back to my best and be available for section for club and country."
