Glasgow will never again build “deserts wi windaes’ pledged the council leader.

Susan Aitken revived the famous Billy Connolly put down about Glasgow’s housing schemes with no facilities, when discussing current regeneration plans.

Speaking at the SNP Conference in Glasgow, Ms Aitken said the regeneration of Sighthill is the most important project of the City Deal and not the Glasgow Airport rail link plan.

Ms Aitken said she has seen the rail link described as the “flagship project” but she said that is not her opinion.

She said the rail link was “an important project” and she and the council was committed to it.

However, she said: “I would like to call the work in Sighthill our flagship”.

She said £250million was being invested in a “huge challenge” to bring land back into productive use.

She said : “Along with that will come 1000 new homes, a school, community campus and amenities.”

Recalling the Connolly comment she added: “Deserts wi windaes will never happen again”
