UNIVERSAL Credit is causing misery and hardship and it should be halted now the SNP conference has agreed.

Shirley Anne Somerville, Social Security Secretary said it was having a devastating impact wherever it was rolled out.

It has begun to be introduced in Glasgow between now and December.

MS Somerville said: “ It will lead to undoubted poverty, hardship and destitution.” she said foodbank usage would increase and rent arrears will rise.”

Alison Thewliss, Glasgow Central MP said Universal Credit was “riddled with flaws”.

She said: “The roll out has started last month , sweeping across this city under a cloud of misery.”

Nicola Sturgeon said it is “beyond doubt” Universal Credit is causing misery.

She said Glasgow was “next in the firing line” for universal credit.

Ms Sturgeon said: “It is unacceptable that in 21st century Scotland, people are unable to eat as a direct result of Westminster Government policy. So to the Tories we say this. find some compassion.

“Halt the roll out of Universal Credit now.”
