SPOTLIGHT ON… GREEN BUSINESS

Our Streets Ahead campaign celebrates people working together to make a difference to their community – and that includes businesses across the city.

At our annual awards ceremony, we reward the top Green Business in Glasgow. It could be a company which is driving forward a community project, supporting local environmental charities, or – like this month’s subject of Spotlight – focussing on reducing waste.

The team at MacGregor and MacDuff kiltmakers are aiming to save up to six tonnes of clothing waste each year, through their new relationship with Shelter Scotland.

In a bid to help divert landfill waste and encourage retail recycling amongst their customers, the Bath Street shop and its sister stores on Dumbarton Road and in Prestwick are providing left-over shirts and socks to Shelter’s shops in the west of Scotland.

The cash raised from selling clothing donated by MacGregor and MacDuff will help Shelter Scotland provide advice and support services.

Gerald Capaldi, managing director of MacGregor and MacDuff, said: “By encouraging our customers to donate their unwanted socks and shirts, not only are we able to support the fantastic work the charity does for people facing homelessness or other housing problems, but we are also able to contribute to the Scottish Governments Zero Waste Plan, by directly reducing landfill waste generated through retail.”

The company’s three stores will also donate tartan offcuts from their manufacturing process, perfect for crafters and upcyclers who rely on charity shops for their materials.
