AN EAST End road which hundreds of residents petitioned to keep open has been closed.

Housing developer Bellway Homes closed off the road in Carntyne’s Eastfields this week despite opposition from the local community.

The north arm of the roundabout on Myreside Street is now closed to Rigby Street, which residents claim is a key route in and out of the estate.

The closure is part of plans initially drawn up 12 years ago.

We previously reported that the community opposed the closure because it will lead to more traffic through the estate and Myreside Street.

Residents also argued that the increase in traffic through the alternative route could be a danger to the children who live in the estate and play outside.

Hundreds backed a petition opposing the closure and a public meeting was held to challenge Glasgow City Council and Bellway Homes on the plans.

But the local authority said they had no power to stop the closure after granting planning permission for the development 12 years ago, which included this road closure.

Bellway previously said that they have a legal obligation to comply with the approved planning consent.

The Evening Times understands that Glasgow City Council officers met with Bellway Homes this week to review the traffic calming measures on Myreside Street. Ways of improving the traffic calming measures are being looked at.
