WHEN you have a world superstar coming into your country, playing in your league and enhancing your league, and putting in some of the performances that he did, you can’t not recognise that.

So, for me, there is no way that Paul Gascoigne can’t be in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. It is disrespectful that he isn’t, and so is the way he has been treated.

He was nominated and put forward and then told that he wouldn’t be inducted. That is farcical.

To dangle that carrot and then take that away from him, especially during Mental Health Week, I don’t think that was professional or the right way to do things.

Paul has had his problems, we all know that. He doesn’t get special treatment but there is a way of dealing with individuals and dealing with people.

When you are looking at inducting people into the Hall of Fame, you don’t look at off the pitch. You look at on the pitch and Paul Gascoigne was a genius.

He is one of my all-time heroes. It was amazing to watch guys like that and I was lucky enough to play against him when I was at Motherwell.

He had character, he had charisma, he was entertaining and he was a legend. His goal for England against Scotland summed up his quality on a football pitch.

I had the privilege of meeting him a few times and he was the most gentle, kind-hearted man ever. He would give you every penny out of him pocket and he was a gentleman.

So the way he has been treated is really disappointing and it is a shame that he won’t be included in the Hall of Fame this weekend.
