HUNDREDS have backed a petition to bring back the Glasgow marathon.

Drumchapel runner Jay Semple sparked the campaign by calling on Glasgow City Council to reinstate the race.

Speaking on the Change.org petition, he said: "The public of Glasgow have shown they have an appetite for more than just the bad diet synonymous with the city. #

"It is a city with an appetite for healthy activity and sport. Recent years have shown Glasgow can host world class sporting events including the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

"It is time the people of Glasgow had their marathon back! Glasgow wants it, Scotland wants it, leading GB athletes support it."

The race previously took place between 1979 and 1987 but was scrapped to make way for a series of smaller distance events.

A total of 740 people had signed the petition, which began two weeks ago.

Glasgow Life confirmed there were no plans to reintroduce the marathon, which was reduced due to a lack of participants, but said it would be open to a discussion on the matter.
