Glasgow's pantomime crowds will be a breathe of fresh air according to comedy par The Krankies after 'snowflake' audiences at shows down south.

Janette and Ian Tough, who play Wee Jimmy and Ian Krankie, will return to the stage in Glasgow for the first time in two years after stints in England.

Both now 71, Janette and Ian told of how excited they are to get started with Cinderella with what is a brand new cast.

The Krankies will be sharing the stage with Still Game's Gavin Mitchell, Jonathan Watson of Only an Excuse?, as well as others for the first time after a string of festive seasons alongside John Barrowman.

But more than anything, it's the Glasgow crowd they are looking forward to seeing, after a somewhat mixed reaction down south.

Janette said: "If you have an English writer sometimes they don't understand why what we do is funny. It can be hard to explain Glasgow humour to people. It's not just the joke, it's actually the way the way words are aligned.

"We have a lot more freedom, the audience like you to talk to them up here. Nowadays it's so pathetic, you get so many snowflakes. They are not as bad up here."

Ian continued: "We got one woman down in Manchester, complaining and went to the papers. She said it was filth and that she had to explain all of the jokes to her children.

"The whole fun of panto is that you get some of the humour for the adults and some for the kids."

The Krankies are at the tail end of an exceptionally busy year which has taken them to both India and Mexico.

Having travelled to star in The Real Marigold Hotel, a spin off due out in a few months, Marigold On Tour, took the pair to Central America. Although they enjoyed the trip, Janette and Ian said the food left a lot to be desired.

Ian said: "We went over there thinking we loved Mexican food, but that was soon disproved."

Janette ended up ill for much of their time in Mexico, saying the diet, which they claim was hotter than they experienced even in India, was too much to handle.

But for Scotland's favourite pantomime duo The Krankies, age is nothing but a number as they prepare to bring their evergreen humour to the SEC Armadillo in Cinderella this festive season.

The pair promise old favourites, with catchphrases and wacky parodies sure to be abundant throughout the shows. But now well-beyond retirement age and still going strong, the duo admit they are beginning to notice some signs of age.

Ian said: "Memorising things is hard, but you speak to the older actors and they're the same. You think 'oh god, I must be getting that dementia', but then you hear even Dame Judy Dench wears an earpiece. You just can't remember. There's nothing wrong, but lines just don't store how they used to.

"The beauty of the comics is though is that you won't blank, you'll say something else and get on with it. We've done Cinderella hundreds of times, and even if the script changes, we know the attitude of it."

Any other signs of age creeping up on them? "He still fair throws me about the stage," Janette says. "Not as much as he used to, but he still does it."

And what of the famous red cap? Will that be making an appearance?

"Wee Jimmy will be there," the couple promised. "Just you wait and see."
