HUNDREDS of Glasgow kids will take part in a mass fundraiser which is part of a campaign to end homelessness in Scotland.

More than 600 young people in the city have signed up to take part in the Wee Sleep Out event which has been organised by Social Bite.

Kids from St Albert’s Primary School in Pollokshields; Stepping Stones Family Learning Centre in Stepps and Notre Dame High School in Dowanhill are among those taking part in the event on November 9. The event takes place four weeks before the nationwide Sleep in the Park on December 8 in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee - and the difference is the kids will take part in a designated sleep zone.

Organiser Alice Thompson, who co-founded Social Bite, said the idea came about last year after so many young people held their own fundraising events because they were not old enough to take part in Sleep in the Park.

She said: “The Wee Sleep Out is really amazing because it gives young people an avenue to be involved in the Social Bite end homelessness mission and feel part of the fun of Sleep in the Park.

“Through the workshops and education that we have been doing, we have been trying to educate young people about how someone becomes homeless, and what they might need in place to make that a reality for them.”

She added: “For me having gone around, been in the schools and educating young people about homelessness, I feel we are at the beginning of a mindset shift.

“It is really exciting speaking to people now that we understand the situation that much better.”

Alice and her team have been doing workshops around Scotland encouraging other young people to take part in the Wee Sleep Out - and over 4,000 have signed up so far . Those taking part should be aged eight to 16, and a responsible adult has to register for the event.

Schools and youth groups are encourage to organise the event in a communal area. Social Bite has provided a pack with a range of activity ideas which will bring home the problem of homelessness to those taking part.
