GARY MCALLISTER insists silverware remains the target for Rangers this season as they look to get back to winning ways after a difficult week in three competitions.

The Light Blues face St Mirren this afternoon aiming to avoid a fourth successive match without a win following their draws with Spartak Moscow and Kilmarnock either side of the loss against Aberdeen.

The defeat to the Dons ended Rangers’ ambitions of lifting the Betfred Cup this term and now the Premiership and the Scottish Cup remain as their only realistic hopes of a winner’s medal in Steven Gerrard’s first campaign as boss.

And assistant manager McAllister reckons the Gers have what it takes to challenge domestically while looking to continue their Europa League campaign.

He said: “I knew Andy Halliday from Middlesbrough so I knew his personality and character.

“I didn’t really know the rest of the players beforehand so you are getting to see them.

“We believe we have a good group of guys with that character. You need personality to play at Ibrox, no doubt about that.

“There will be times when the crowd gets frustrated and that’s when it becomes about your character and personality. When things are tight and teams are frustrating you, just be a player.

“We’ll keep encouraging them to do the things they are good at in the areas they are supposed to being doing them - to go and hurt teams.

“We are here to win, to try and win something. The longer we stay in the Europa League is a just a massive bonus, but we are here to win.

“I associate this club with winning things. It is very similar to when I went to Liverpool as a player.

“I thought I had a better chance of winning things when I got to a club like that. If you play here, you have a chance of winning things.”
