A Glasgow man who has dedicated his life to helping children has been left stranded on an exotic island after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

Jon Paul McAllister was on a trip of a lifetime to Madagascar to celebrate completing chemotherapy for bowel cancer and his recent engagement when his health took a turn for the worst.

The 38-year-old was stuck in an unsanitised medical facility in Madagascar for two weeks before being taken by air ambulance to the island of Réunion, where he remains.

Scans have since revealed that Jon Paul’s stage four cancer has returned and has left him deemed ‘medically unfit to fly’ on a commercial airline.

The couple are now facing bills for treatment and a further air ambulance, as well as an ongoing battle with their insurance company to pay out.

A fundraising page set up to raise £35,000 to help get Jon Paul home to receive proper treatment has been set up by devastated friends.

So far, nearly £4,000 has been donated by wellwishers.

Karen Bell said: “Jon Paul is an amazing guy, who has always been, and continues to be, an inspiration to so many people.

"His loyal, strong, fun, humble, determined and caring character is why we all love him and need him home where he belongs.

“Jon Paul’s huge heart has led him to live a life helping others. He has impacted on so many people’s lives, both personally, and professionally through his 10 years working with children and families.

“We’re desperate to get Jon Paul home to receive the best treatment possible. He’s one of lives giving people.”
