A music festival featuring acts including Jake Bugg and The Coral has been cancelled due to low ticket sales.

The Dirty Weekender festival, due to take place in Kilmarnock this month, has been axed.

Organisers took the difficult decision to pull the plug after failing to shift tickets to the four-day event.

An impressive line-up had already been announced including The LaFontaines, The Snuts, Twisted Wheel, Jake Bugg, The Coral and Goldie Lookin Chain.

Over 100 acts in total had signed up to perform at the festival which was due to kick off on November 22, but less than 500 tickets were sold.

Lead organiser David Hanvey took to social media to confirm the decision.

He said: "To say I write this with a heavy heart is an understatement.

"I am genuinely heartbroken. I struggle to find the words to try and explain the emotions that we are experiencing just now.

"As the rumours have stated we at MFM Events have taken the decision to cancel the Dirty Weekender festival.

"It is a hard pill to swallow but poor ticket sales have left us with no choice but to pull the event. We have exhausted every possible avenue to keep this alive but the bare truth of the matter is the poor ticket sales result in there not being enough revenue to move forward.

He added: "I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that support this event everyone that supported me and everyone that bought tickets. I am just so sorry that it has ended this way."

Ticketholders have been left gutted by the decision.

Kev Ze Vizard wrote: "Sorry to hear mate! Absolutely gutted this is happening. You've done wonders for many folk including myself. This is not your fault. Sad times."

William Cairney added: "Sad day for Ayrshire music. You guys done well for the scene. All the best."
