CARNOUSTIE Golf Hotel is instantly recognizable thanks to its role in the Open Championship.

The hotel provides the backdrop to a course which is ingrained in the brain of sports fans and frequented by the likes of golfing superstar Tiger Woods. Sea views create a serene surrounding while the constant clatter of putting adds to the setting. The building is iconic and impressive, and as such expectations are high for anyone staying at the hotel.

Check-in, however, felt a bit rushed which immediately lowered those expectations. The receptionist quickly pointed out everything a guest needed to know to navigate round Carnoustie Golf Hotel with super speed.

This approach did not feel intimate and perhaps it is because Carnoustie Golf Hotel is owned by chain Bespoke which made the venue appear more corporate. The hotel offers 86 luxury en suite bedrooms and 10 suites. A nice touch is that each hotel room key keeps in the theme of things with a golf ball keyring. For the avid golf fans, there are stunning views of the course from some of the rooms - and you can even watch golfers tee off from the first hole.

Calders bistro is the main dining facility in the venue. Options include everything from a traditional fish and chips to steaks. A full Scottish breakfast is also offered to guests with cereals, pastries and fruits a tempting alternative. The dining area again provides the same views of the golf course which will delight any fan of the sport.

Spa facilities are also available for those who want to break away from the golf theme. Aside from a variety of spa treatments at an additional costs, guests can access a 15-station gymnasium, swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.

The nearby town of Carnoustie is charming and a visit feels like a step back in time. For city dwellers, a trip to nearby Dundee might make a more bustling day out.
