A GROUP of thugs set upon a man and glassed him during a violent assault in a Greenock pub.

The 31-year-old victim was hit with a glass in the face during the attack which has been described as unprovoked.

He suffered severe cuts to his ear and his face when he was set upon by a gang in the Tail O’ the Bank in Rue End at around 5pm on Saturday.

His attackers, who were in the pub with a larger group, were all wearing suits and ties and appear to have been at a function elsewhere.

Detectives are now appealing for help from those who were in the pub at the time, to catch those responsible.

Greenock Police Detective Sergeant Neil Martin said: “This appears to be an unprovoked attack. It took place near the pool table. The victim was with his friends when he was attacked by a group of about three or four men in their early 20s wearing suits and ties.
