Step Up For Streets Ahead

Each month, we feature an inspiring individual who is working wonders in his or her community. Do you know someone who has stepped up to solve a local problem or to create something special? Email ann.fotheringham@heraldandtimes.co.uk with the details. This month, we catch up Tracey O’Lone, 55, from Castlemilk, who is one of Glasgow City Council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers (NIVs).

Day job: I work in recruitment.

Why did you decide to become a NIV? To help the area. A few years ago, the local councillor organised a meeting in the local church for residents concerned about getting something done to tidy up our community. I’m quite verbal so I ended up as chairperson of the new Castlecroft Residents Association.

What does your role involve? It’s my job to get people involved. We have some really great members, but we are all older, and some are now in their 70s and 80s. It would be great to see some younger residents coming through. We do clean-ups and grass-cutting and lift the leaves. We’re also going to be winter wardens this year, clearing the snow and gritting the paths. Our biggest project has been Poppy Lane, a run down space between Croftend Avenue and Castlemilk Terrace, which we have turned into an all-year-round remembrance garden where people can add the names of lost loved ones. It’s a lovely, peaceful spot on the way to the train station, where people can slow down and reflect for a minute. Our next project is building a park and ride area to keep traffic off the street.

Why is it important to step up? Because so many people don’t do it. They complain, but they don’t do anything to help.

Who inspires you? Richard Branson, because he is self-made and so successful

Best piece of advice ever given? “Remember that everyone else is an idiot.” From my dad.

Worst piece of advice ever given? I haven’t had any bad advice.

Favourite spot in Glasgow and why? I love the whole city, its people, and its friendliness.

Describe yourself in three words: Loyal, compassionate and enthusiastic.
