John Lewis and Partners have finally released their ever eagerly anticipated Christmas advert and this time if features a very famous face.

Sir Elton John is the star of this year's festive feature which touches on the global superstar's fame through the ages and how a gift he received as a child helped to set his course for stardom.

The film, named The Boy and the Piano, begins in present day and works backwards chronologically through Elton’s life right until the moment on Christmas morning when he received the special gift that changed his life.

Beginning with today, Elton is playing his hit Your Song on a piano next to his Christmas tree.

The shot then sweeps to glimpses of the 71-year-old playing the song on stage to thousands over the years.

Glasgow Times:

Cascading back in time, we then see a teenage Elton playing for friends and family at a house party before catching a glimpse of his mum watching him on stage at a school show.

Finally, an excited junior Elton is seen running down the stairs on Christmas morning to find that he has been gifted a piano - the special gift that changed his life.

The department store's message this year is that a gift can have the power to inspire, influence and change someone's life.

People have already taken to social media to praise the heart-warming advert.

Jacob Darcy wrote on Twitter: "Best John Lewis ad I've seen in my lifetime."

Another Ali Mitchell wrote: "Beautiful, well done John Lewis & Sir Elton."

Others were disappointed by this years attempt by the high-end chain.

Estelle Roberts wrote: "Might boycott John Lewis since they no longer know how to make adverts."

While Danny Creswell wrote: "Sorry but I absolutely hate the new John Lewis advert, wither everything else they could have done with the advert after all that has happened this yeah they have Elton johns life basically on camera... worst advert they’ve ever done."

In recent years, the release of the John Lewis Christmas advert has become an annual tradition among British shoppers and previous videos from the high-street retailer have been a big hit with those looking to get in the festive spirit.

Over the last decade, the company has produced a stream of emotional, tear-jerking ads, from a romance between two snowmen, the sad tale of a lonely man on the moon, Monty the Penguin, a bouncing boxer dog and last year's Moz the monster.
