THE parents of a baby who faced a battle for survival have thanked Glasgow staff for their ‘love, hard work and expertise’ on World Prematurity Day.

Finlay Thorburn arrived weighing less than two pounds but is now thriving after spending almost three months in hospital.

All NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde maternity hospitals will be marking the day in some way with all babies at the Princes Royal Maternity hospital sporting special purple bobble hats.

Mum Morna, 31, said: “Without the amazing staff at the Princess Royal Maternity, Finlay wouldn’t be here.

“We spent 101 days in the hospital and brought Finlay home on his due date which was 26 July – we also moved house that day too. We knew every member of staff by name and it became our second home.

“Everyone who looked after Finlay has a special place in our hearts; there are no words.

“It wasn’t even day by day, we took things hour by hour and there were times we thought he wouldn’t make it. But they never gave up on him.”

Marjorie Clark, senior charge nurse at the Princess Royal Maternity’s Neonatal Unit said: “Spending more than three months with us in our neonatal unit, Finlay and his mum and dad, and big sister became very much part of our ‘family’.

“The journey for such a preterm baby is a long path with many hurdles to endure, some small, some big.

“For us, the best thank you is seeing baby going home with their family."

Morna and her husband are organising a fundraising dinner for the Princess Royal Maternity on 26 April. For more details email Finlay2019@gmail.com
