A man who was found dead in Clydebank was the victim of a violent robbery in the city centre hours before.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged assault and intent to rob from James McGowan on Stockwell Place before his death.

Mr McGowan, 49, was discovered on the canal path of Braes Avenue at around 4.45pm on Sunday, November 4.

Detectives from the Major Investigation Teams have been called in to find out what happened to him.

Investigations so far have revealed that Mr McGowan frequented the city centre and drank in the Scotia Bar in Stockwell Street.

Detective Inspector Grant Durie, of the Major Investigation Team previous said that the victim boarded a number two First Bus, which left Glasgow City Centre at 1.50am on the night he died.

He sat on the rear seat and travelled to Clydebank before walking along the Forth and Clyde Canal towards Braes Avenue.

Following the arrest, he added: "We continue to treat Mr McGowan's death as unexplained at this time and are still trying to piece together his movements prior to his death. I am re-iterating my earlier appeal for anyone with information to get in touch with the incident room on 0141 305 4530.

"Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

The 42-year-old man is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
