ABERDEEN captain Graeme Shinnie admitted his team might as well not turn up for Sunday's cup final with Celtic if they play as badly as they did at Motherwell.

Their 3-0 defeat at Fir Park was arguably the worst performance of Derek McInnes's reign at Pittodrie and the manager kept his players in the dressing room for half an hour after the match.

Shinnie is hoping to lead his hometown club to victory at Hampden Park but knows they have no chance unless they vastly improve before they meet the champions.

Shinnie said: "We were not good enough all over the pitch, we were a mile off it. We were embarrassing at times.

"We need to have a good look at ourselves. We've got a massive game next weekend and if play anything like that we might as well not bother turning up.

"We need a good week's training and look to bounce back.

"You could say that it’s better to get that kind of performance out of the way now but I wouldn’t – you need a good game going into the cup final and we don't want any games like that.

"We’ll evaluate it this week and then we have to try and forget about it as we build up to the final.

"Obviously, there have been some harsh words after the game. There always would be after a display like that and, if there weren't, then there would be a problem.

"The harsh words were from everyone, the players the staff, everyone had a go at each other and it's what's needed after a game like that. But words are easy – it’s all about bouncing back on the pitch

"Coming in after the game, you know what it's going to be like and it's not a good feeling; it’s one of the worst and we need to turn that around for Sunday.

“We can’t afford another performance like this, especially against a team like Celtic in a cup final. But we know that and we need a good working week to make sure this doesn’t happen again."

Aberdeen's defending was appalling for all three Motherwell goals and, indeed, the home side could easily have scored more than three.

Shinnie said: "I thought before the first goal went in we were doing well. We were on the front foot and I had a chance that I should have done better with.

"We were in the ascendancy and then we concede a goal like the first one. It's our corner and ten seconds later it's in the back of our net.

"That can't happen, especially when you're at a tough ground which we've experienced before

"It's not good enough and at 1-0 you then want to get a goal back as quickly as you can but we go the opposite way and concede again from a set piece, which just isn’t good enough.

“We’d been doing well up until then and then it all went to pot but we need to deal with this

"For a cup final you don't need any extra motivation; you should always be motivated for big games like that. We’ve been bouncing back from things ever since I’ve been at the club.

“The pressure is right on us now so we need to step up and answer that."
