AN attack by vandals on a Battlefield shopfront have prompted fresh fears within the community after ongoing disorder in the area.

Cortex Hair Design on Holmlea Road is the latest local business to be hit by antisocial behaviour after a spate of incidents in recent weeks.

The store was targeted by two men just before 7am on Sunday morning, who appeared to smash the front window of Cortex with a hammer before fleeing the scene.

Reports have also appeared on social media of car windows being smashed and rear-view mirrors damaged on both Holmlea Road and Rannoch Street by the young thugs over the weekend.

James Docherty, who owns the salon along with his wife Kerry, said: "The whole area has been destroyed, cars had their mirrors smashes and their windows as well.

"We've just had to board up the windows and cover it, but we're scared to leave the store. What if they come back?

"It will be at least a week before we can get this fixed. Our insurance will cover it but we're going to have to pay the excess.

"We have five staff here who might not want to come in if they don't feel safe."

This latest attack on businesses comes after bus shelters, a phone box and other shopfronts were hit by teenage thugs earlier this month.

Three stores on Battlefield road were amongst those left with damages, which owners claimed would cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

Just days before, bus shelters on two bus routes were smashed between Muirend and Clarkston, leaving shattered glass strewn across pavements.

Battlefield residents have said that the culprits of all recent attacks were teenagers. It is not currently known if the same group of youngsters are involved in each of the attacks.

Members of the community are now reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated with how their area has become a repeated target for vandals.

Cortex's owner added: "We just don't know what they're going to do next.

"Everybody around here is absolutely raging.

"This is normally a very quiet street, but there has been a lot going on.

"We have been here for 11 years and had no other issues. All of a sudden it's all gone crazy.

"The community is really riled up now and their is a lot of unrest. They just can't believe how terrible it is in the area right now."

Police Scotland were contacted for comment but did not respond by time of publication.
