STARSTRUCK young patients helped Years & Years light up the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow as Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity’s Christmas lights were switched on for 2018.

Lucas Band, three, and Bo Cox, seven, were joined by the band, including front-man Olly Alexander, and fellow band members Mikey Goldworthy and Emre Tűrkmen.

The group switched on the lights before heading to the SSE Hydro to play in front of thousands at a sell-out gig.

Both of the young patients have had their lives transformed by a kidney transplant after braving treatment for kidney failure in the hospital’s renal unit.

Lucas’s Dad, Frazer, donated one of his own kidneys to his son last month, and Bo will celebrate one year of getting the call for his kidney transplant this Christmas.

Shona Cardle, Chief Executive of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Years & Years to the hospital today.

"The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting them, so we can’t thank them enough for taking time out to join us for our Christmas lights switch-on just hours before getting up on stage at the SSE Hydro.

"Many of our young patients and their families will spend the Christmas period in the hospital, so making it as festive as possible is so important.

"So many other children spend time at home and at school putting up their trees and decorations, and going to local Christmas light switch-ons, so giving some of our young patients the chance to enjoy today’s festivities at the hospital is very special.”

Both Lucas and Bo are treated by the specialist renal team at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children.

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity aims to raise £500,000 for its renal appeal in partnership with Kidney Kids, which will fund the enhancement of care provision and services on the renal unit - a national centre for kidney transplants.
