A People’s vote on leaving the EU has been backed by Scotland’s council leaders.

Cosla representing Scotland’s local authorities has said it fears even fewer resources for services after Brexit.

Alison Evison, Cosla President saida vote is a way of of the current crisis.

She said: “Cosla’s position was a strong one for remaining a member of the EU. It was two years ago and it is now. Along with families and communities, councils are deeply worried about where we now are.

“A big hit on our economy will mean an increase in local poverty, fewer resources locally to plan and deliver our services, no structured programme to support our local economies and real threats to all aspects of our import and export trade.

“A People’s Vote is a practical way to get out of the constitutional crisis we are in.”

Cosla was backed by former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale.

she said: “There is an alternative to Theresa May’s bad deal and no deal, it’s a People’s Vote with the option of keeping the best deal we currently have as a member of the EU.”
