Protesters staged a demonstration outside the St Enoch Square branch of Tesco.

Activists from the Open Cages 'Stand with Chickens' campaign stood outside the store front with graphic posters depicting the conditions of chickens in battery farms.

The 13 campaigners wore overalls designed to mimic the uniforms of workers in battery farms.

The group is staging several demonstrations around the UK in an attempt to convince Tesco to sign the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), to given chickens more space and not use fast-growing breeds for its products.

The BCC lists a number of requirements signed by 25 of the biggest European animal organisations.

The campaign originates in Poland.

One of the campaigners, Monika Jotautaite, 21, said: "The two main things we disagree with is the stocking density, where they allow up to 19 chickens in one square metre.

"The chickens aren't able to spread their wings properly or walk around. Tesco also supports the usage of fast-growing breeds, where chickens grow so fast their legs break.

"This is shocking, given that Tesco is the biggest store in the market. They have said they don't think fast-growing breeds and stocking density is a problem.

“Tesco always say they ensure the best quality products for their customers, but if customers knew what Tesco’s standard chicken farms really look like, they would be shocked,” she said.

Store workers and a spokeswoman from Tesco both declined to comment.
