The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will soon be welcoming a huge new attraction.

Coming to the museum on January 22 is Dippy, the famous Diplodocus from the Natural History Museum in London.

To prepare for his arrival, Kelvingrove has opened a new dinosaur-themed shop, the Mega-store-us.

The shop features a range of dinosaur-related merchandise and Natural History Museum products to prepare the city for its enormous new resident.

Dippy is a plaster cast replica of a diplodocus skeleton, made in 1902 at the request of King Edward VII. The cast is made up of 292 separate pieces, and is more than 20 metres long.

Kelvingrove Museum is the only Scottish location on the ‘Dippy on Tour’ travel itinerary that will bring the diplodocus cast to audiences outside the capital for the first time.

The iconic dinosaur will be in Glasgow from January 22 to May 6, 2019.

Jacob Gray, aged nine, explored the new dinosaur shop at the museum and bought a cuddly version of Dippy.

“I’m so excited to meet Dippy,” he said.

“I can’t wait to come back once he has stomped into Kelvingrove.

“Until he does I’m taking my Dippy everywhere. He’s soft, squishy and brilliant.’

Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor David McDonald, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Dippy will be visiting Kelvingrove Museum as part of the Natural History Museum’s ‘Dippy on Tour’.

“As an area just inside the main entrance is transformed into something resembling a scene from Jurassic Park it’s clear the anticipation is growing.

“There is a real air of expectation as we eagerly await the arrival of the biggest thing to come to Kelvingrove in an age – quite literally.

“Many of our visitors are excited to see the spectacular 111-year-old dinosaur cast up close and we are keen to use this wonderful opportunity to engage people in the way we think about and protect our natural world.”
