IT was two wheels good for a talented young artist as she won a cycle safety competition with more than 10,000 entries.

St Angela's Primary School pupil Melissa Robb took the top prize and was rewarded with a new bike for her efforts.

Her mum and dad, Allison and Norman, joined her at school to see councillor Anna Richardson hand over the prize.

Ms Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction Richardson said: “Our on-going road safety campaign in our schools is all about raising awareness among young people so they feel confident being out and about in the city.

“The annual competition to design the calendar is a great way to get children thinking about road safety.

“In the end the judges had an incredibly difficult job whittling down the thousands and thousands of entries to just one winner.

“But I am delighted that Melissa eventually came out top with her design on cycle safety.

“We are very keen to encourage as many people to take up cycling as possible and helping to get across the cycle safety message to all ages is very welcome.

“I’d also like to thank all the Junior Road Safety Officers in the schools across the city who helped to organise the competition.

"Please keep up the great work.”

The Road Safety Unit in the council's LES department runs a Junior Road Safety Officer scheme in primaries in Glasgow.

Two pupils from every school in the city help the Road Safety Unit promote and deliver road safety in their school and community to keep everyone safe.

One of the JRSO tasks is to run an annual competition to design a road safety calendar, which is displayed in every nursery, primary and secondary school in Glasgow.

There were four themes to choose from: Cycle Safety, Safer Crossing Places, In-car Safety and The Green Cross Code.

The winning poster, themed on Cycle Safety was designed by P7 Melissa.

There were more than 10,000 entries received this year.

The JRSOs in St Angela’s Primary School, Travis O’Brien,11 and Adam Donachy, 11, will also receive gift vouchers for organising and running the competition in their school.
