ELDERLY people and party goers are being urged to consider putting non-slip soles on shoes to help avoid winter-related slips and trips.
This time last year Accident and Emergency departments dealt with 29,000 people with 40% of there because of weather related injuries such as broken wrists and ankles.
Writing for the NHS, Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said, “Older people are at particular risk of falls during winter.
"The streets can be extremely slippery underfoot due to fallen leaves, accumulations of rain, ice and snow, so we would encourage all older people to take extra care when out and about.
“When weather conditions are like this a pair of sturdy shoes with non-slip soles are worth their weight in gold as they may prevent a nasty tumble and resultant injury.”
George Rogers, who runs Mac’s in Sauchiehall Street, said: “We get a lot of people coming into the shop after Christmas to get their shoes and boots sorted because ‘Santa’ hasn’t brought the presents they wanted.
"But now’s the time to make sure your shoes, boots and stilettos will keep you on your feet, whatever the weather.”
