STEVEN GERRARD will run the rule over two American trialists as he bids to bolster his Rangers ranks during the January transfer window.

Defender Andrew Gutman and midfielder Matt Polster have both started stints with the Light Blues squad at the Hummel Training Centre.

Gutman has made his name Stateside in the College system with Indiana University, while former Chicago Fire star Polster played against LA Galaxy during Gerrard’s stint across the pond.

Boss Gerrard has already lost Umar Sadiq and Ovie Ejaria from his squad after they cut short their loan deals to return to Roma and Liverpool respectively in recent days.

And the 38-year-old is keen to add to his options as Rangers look to maintain their challenge for the Premiership title this term.

“Have you read my emails to the chairman?” Gerrard joked when asked if the departures of Ejaria and Sadiq had freed up funds for new players. “It makes us a little bit lighter, two bodies down, so possibly, yeah.

“We have a couple of trialists from the US who are looking for the next challenge in their career, so we were asked if we want to have a look at them, so it made sense.

“I know one of them and played against him in the MLS – Matt Polster, who played for Chicago Fire and who I know is a good player - and Andrew Gutman, who’s one from the College system and is very highly thought of.

“So we’re going to have a look at the two of them for seven or eight days. We’ll see how they do.”

Gerrard has been linked with moves for several players in recent weeks and is focusing his search on attacking reinforcements ahead of the title run-in.

Rangers recruited 15 players during the summer window and Gerrard will keep his options open as he attempts to strike the right deals next month.

He said: “It might be a mix. I don’t know right now. In an ideal situation they come for longer than a loan.

“That’s always the priority – can we find players who are going to come here for a long time.”

A move for a striker is a priority for Rangers in the coming weeks after the departure of Sadiq left Gerrard with only Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty in his forward line.

But the Anfield legend has once again played down talk of a loan swoop for highly-rated England youth international Dominic Solanke.

Gerrard said: “I read about Dominic Solanke every three or four days and I don’t know where it comes from.

“I haven’t heard Dominic Solanke say he wants to leave. I haven’t heard Liverpool say they want him to leave, so there’s nothing really to say about it.”
