A TOP cop has hit out after his officers arrested five people for drink drive related offences over the New Year celebrations period.

Chief Inspector Colin Convery said he is appalled drivers still find it acceptable to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. He also said the number of arrests was a concern.

His comments come after his officers said they made five arrests between 11.05pm on Hogmanay and 1.35am on Wednesday, January 2.

Five men were arrested and charged by police for drink drive related offences in Ardrossan, Irvine, Largs and Stevenston. One was found to be allegedly five times over the legal limit.

Chief Inspector Convery, Area Commander in North Ayrshire, said: "In December, we had high profile launch events both locally and nationally to raise awareness on the consequences of drink driving.

"I am appalled that drivers still find it acceptable to get behind the wheel of their vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

"Of the five drivers arrested over the New Year period one was found to be almost (allegedly) five times the legal limit.

"Three have been held in police custody to appear at court and all have been the subject of reports to the Procurator Fiscal."

He added: "As we work with our partners and communities to improve the safety of our roads these numbers are of huge concern. I would like to thank anyone who has contacted us to report concerns about someone driving while under the influence.

"I would also appeal to communities to continue helping us to raise awareness on the issue and to demonstrate, in conversation with family and friends or by reporting concerns to police, that drink driving will not be tolerated in 2019."
