POP-ROCKERS Rubian will kick off 2019 in style with a show at their favourite city spot - King Tut's.

The band have had a phenomenal 2018 with the release of their debut single Start Again, and the new year looks set to get even better.

"King Tut's is a big show for us in the New Year," explained singer Cheryl Risk, who spoke to The Evening Times before Christmas.

She continued: "It is well known and it is probably my favourite venue to play. It is good to start off strong."

The Glasgow-based band will perform King Tut's New Year's Revolution festival on Thursday, January 17.

The show is just a teaser of what fans can expect when they take on the festival circuit in the summer, which is bound to be a busy time for the quartet.

Rubian have already been snapped up by the Vibration Festival in Falkirk on May 25 to play alongside the likes of Feeder, The Coral and Alabama 3, and they are also signed up for a few other events which they are remaining tight-lipped about.

Cheryl said: "We have a couple of festivals lined up for 2019 which is quite exciting.

"We want to get our four track EP out by the end of January and we are also hoping to release our new single then.

"Then we will just play as many festivals and gigs as we can."

She added: "We really want to put ourselves on the map so that people treat us as a serious band."

Rubian started life after a determined Cheryl persuaded the men of the band to let her take over as their lead singer.

Guitarist Niall McNaughtan, bassist Tom McBroom and drummer Ryan Smith were previously involved in Dillinger.

They advertised for a new male lead singer which Cheryl responded to.

Cheryl explained: "It was about a year and a half ago, and the boys had been in a band before. Their singer had left them so they were looking for a male singer.

"I had been solo before but I wanted to get into a band to make me stronger.

"I seen an advert that they were looking for a singer but they wanted a boy.

"I just messaged anyway and said I sing and I am a songwriter – I have everything that you are looking for apart from being a boy basically.

"They were like we will maybe give it a try but we are not keen on having a girl. I went along and met them. We all got on really well and that was us."

Since that moment, they have blended their talent together to create their Indie pop rock sound and with a female front woman, they certainly stand out from the crowd.

Cheryl said: "I love it. I feel it makes us a wee bit different. It is very rare I come across another female front woman ever."

Cheryl admits she is excited about the future and she hopes her and her bandmates passion for music will help drive the band forward.

She said: "I just love how creative you can be when you write your own music, you have got complete creative freedom. Nobody can tell you what is right or what is wrong in music. No one can tell what to do.

"I love singing, writing and performing – and everything that comes along with it."

She added: "I love seeing people’s faces when I am singing and I love their feedback. If I thought the lyrics have touched them a certain way I love that too because that is really powerful."
