Plans to build a student accommodation block in Glasgow city centre have been dropped.

Developers have withdrawn their plans for 450-bed students flats on derelict land between Renfrew and Renfield Street, eight months after they were submitted.

Concerns over parking and residential amenity are thought to have lead to the decision.

However, the developers are still seeking approval for a 300-bed hotel on the same site.

A statement submitted to Glasgow City Council by developers reads: “The site to the north of the proposed hotel block is not intended for development as part of this application, and will therefore remain vacant in the short-term. It is the applicant’s intention to develop this site at a later date.”

As previously reported by the Evening Times, the plans included a central courtyard area for residents to enjoy and frontage on Renfrew Street and Renfield Street.

Councillor Thomas Kerr, deputy group leader of the Conservatives, said at the time: “Students are also the backbone of our night time economy, this site has been looked at for both office space and residential but neither suits. There is no student accommodation at this end of the city and this area would make sense to have this built here.”
