Over 1,500 people have signed a petition to save an East End swimming pool from closure.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, Whitehill Pool in Dennistoun is one of several sports facilities potentially facing closure.

Leaked draft budget options seen by the Evening Times declare dozens of vital city services could be in the firing line when councillors meet to discuss spending plans for the year ahead.

Ahead of any budgets being proposed, the Glasgow Whitehill Amateur Swimming club, which formed in 1977 and has over 200 members, have taken action to protect the beloved facility.

A petition posted online reads: "While these are only options at this stage Whitehill Swimming Club is anxious about the future of the pool and as such, the Club itself.

"We urge you to make every effort to attend the Dennistoun Community Council Meeting on January 8 at 7pm in Dennistoun Library, 2A Craigpark, Dennistoun G31 2NA.

"The three local councillors will be in attendance and this gives an ideal opportunity to share your thoughts on these proposals and also to display how vital Whitehill Swimming Club is, not just to local residents, but children and adults across the city."

Barlia Sports Centre, Bellahouston Bowls, Drumchapel Pool, Lister Street Bowls, Greenfield, Ruchhill Golf, Haghill, Ibrox, John Paul, Lochend and Stepford are all also under threat.

Proposals could also include a review of sports venue opening hours.

Glasgow City Council have said that the leaked documents "do not constitute any group’s proposed budget".

Adding: “Like any other year, officers from across the council family are working up a wide range of options and costings for members of all political groups.

“This is a technical exercise designed to help members consider the value and also the impact of potential investments or savings.

“The options do not constitute any group’s proposed budget – and it is normal for options to be reviewed and refined over a number of weeks and months, prior to members deciding if they wish to include any of them in their proposals.”
