DRIVERS were forced to leave their vehicles in a Glasgow carpark after traffic light problems left them unable to exit the building in the evening rush hour.

Motorists took to Twitter to demand answers from Glasgow City Council after waiting more than an hour to leave Duke Street multi-storey carpark.

A number of drivers said they had given up and abandoned their vehicles to catch trains.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said the problem was due to temporary traffic lights put in place by Scottish Gas Networks and a failure to put staff in place to direct traffic from 7am to 7pm as required.

She said police were drafted in to allow motorists to leave the carpark and said the council would be seeking anwers from the gas authority.

Margaret Phinn tweeted: "Help! I'm trapped in duke street car park, lines of cars trying to get out of here, what's happening."

Lynsey Stewart‏ tweeted Glasgow City Council, saying: "What are you going to do about the chaos in Duke Street car park? I've had to abandon my car. I was stuck for nearly an hour. Now I'll have to arrange to go and collect it later. What's your solution?"

Isobel Boylan tweeted: "Starting to get hungry. Can you please let us out.'

The Evening Times contacted Scottish Gas Network for comment.
