IT was a rotten summer for Celtic in terms of arrivals but it is shaping up to be a strong winter window.

And with still more than a fortnight left to go then I fully suspect that Celtic will still add to the guys that they have brought in.

I think the signings so far are decent. I like the look of Timothy Weah and he obviously comes from real pedigree while Oliver Burke just a few years ago was being held up as the great saviour for Scotland.

You don’t lose that talent.

He might have lost his way a little bit in the game and the fact he is in need of game time reflects that but he is a boy with a point to prove. And he most certainly has something about him. If he can find that form then Celtic will have a player on their hands.

The fact that they are both loan signings is just the way it is. Of course you would prefer it if you were bringing in permanent deals but some of the money doing the rounds at the minute south of the border is ludicrous. And we all know that in Scotland you aren’t coming anywhere near to being able to compete with that.

But there is Odsonne Edouard there with Weah now to back him up and I think we will all like a look at Vakoun Ossouf Bayo. I know Lubo Moravcik has said that he will score goals at Celtic and his record is very good.

He is young and fully fits the business mould that the club has. He will want to hit the ground running and unlike the other two, he has been playing regularly and scoring goals too this season so he will be mentally and physically ready to go and get the boots on right away.

But I still think there is time to get in another centre-half and a right-back.

And while we all applaud the model and the success it has brought Celtic in terms of financially staying on an even keel, there is an argument to say that you can push the boat out in isolated cases for a player who might not necessarily be in the age group where you are going to see a return on your money.

While the hope with Bayo will be that he follows in the footsteps of Moussa Dembele and Victor Wanyama in that he makes an impression, does well and can potentially move on for a decent fee. I do think there is a case to make that not all signings have to fit into that mould.

I don't like to hark back to my own time because I understand how much the game has changed in that time and the financial gap is significantly wider than it ever was but at the same if you look at myself, Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon who were brought in by Martin O'Neill, we were never going to be sold for the same money that we came in for.

But you can see what we all brought to the table. That isn't to criticise the current model in any way. It has worked perfectly for Celtic and ensures that the club are financially successful but every now and again I think there is a case to say that you can spent a bit of money on a player whose return won't be in a resale but rather simply on where they can take you on the park.

And with Celtic still looking at a solid central defender and a right-back then there might be an argument to say that is where you need to spend it.

And if it gets you back into the Champions League again next summer and through the qualifiers then you've made your money back.

There is also the fact that Celtic are very much in a title race. There is a lot been said about the business that Rangers have done in the window and you have to applaud the signings of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davies - they are quality additions. But I still think that Celtic are in the driving seat.

If they look after themselves and concentrate on getting back a bit of consistency into their performances then I don't think they should be fearing anyone.

They have been over the course before and they know what is expected of them. I don't think players like Scott Brown and Callum McGregor and James Forrest will be easily spooked by the fact Rangers are up for a challenge.

But they do have to get back to performing. I think attacking wise now Celtic have options. For the first time really this season there will be an option to play with two up front which might just be a help for Edouard and it will be interesting to see just how the players react to a little bit of adversity.

They haven't been genuinely questioned for a long time in the title race but my money is on them rolling up the sleeves and showing they they have the stomach for the fight now.
