The man who discovered an 83-year-old bottle of Buckfast owned by his grandparents has shared his disappointment at the result of an online auction.

Glasgow man Jonathan Porter had put the pre-1396 bottle of tonic wine on auction site eBay hoping to sale it to a "connoisseur" of the drink.

However, the winning bid, which was announced on Thursday evening, came from Tam Wilson of West Lothian who spent £10,000 on the purchase.

However, Mr Wilson has since revealed he cannot afford to pay for the quoted sum, with friends launching a crowdfunder to raise the money themselves.

The seller has now shared his own disappointment in the decision of Mr Wilson to make a bid he could not complete.

Mr Porter said: "I’m pretty disappointed but that’s the risk you take selling on eBay I suppose.

"I'm sure it’ll be disappointing for the genuine bidders who missed out as well."

Mr Wilson now reportedly has two weeks to pay for the miniature bottle.

But while he is giving him a chance to stump up the cash, the seller is keeping his options open.

He added: "I’m duty bound to give the winner a fortnight to try to raise the money so fingers crossed.

"However I have launched an email, antiquebuckfast@gmail.com, if anyone was genuinely interested in buying the bottle and wanted to contact me."

Elliot Henderson wrote: "Don't bid on something you can't afford!

"Don't go on Ebay without mummy's permission if you can't handle the consequences."

Stephen Jack added: "Take it you are paying in installments."

Another Facebook user said: "Aw naw. Poor guy will have already mentally spent that money. You need to tell him."
