Cops are currently searching the surrounding areas for Mr Burns, with fears growing for his safety.
Members of the public are also believed to be conducting their own searches for the missing man.
But, officers have issued an urgent appeal asking the public to laise with them before heading out.
A police spokesperson said: "We are aware of online information that members of the public wish to conduct searches in respect of Mr Allan Burns, missing from Kilbarchan.
"Officers are currently conducting searches to try and locate Mr Burns and are asking members of the public, who wish to assist in this search to liaise with them.
"Independent searches can compromise ongoing inquiries or interfere with policing methods used to search for missing people, efficiently and effectively.
"It is important that any searches are co-ordinated fully and members of the public are not putting themselves in any danger when carrying out a search."
