EARLY risers in Llandudno were treated to the striking spectacle as of the Moon turning shades of red in a lunar eclipse.

The earth passed between the moon and the sun in what is known as a super blood wolf moon. The moon appeared to glow red while seeming brighter and closer to Earth than normal. While the moon is in the Earth’s shadow small amounts of sunlight bend around the earth and the effect of this is bathe the Moon in red. It also appears to be bigger and nearer the earth than normal.

The eclipse began at 2:35am on Monday and ended at 7:49am.

One photography enthusiast, Tanya Liepens, said: “It was beautiful to see it change from its normal colour to the red orange glow, it was very eerie but beautiful.”

She added she had used a 150mm lens with 2 second exposures and manual focus. Her images were taken at different stages from approximately 4.40am until 5.15am.

Tanya lives in  Deganwy and is a former nurse, she added: "I'm just an amateur and a member of Conwy Camera Club. I decided to learn photography when I had to finish work two years ago as a way of keeping my mind active. Landscapes are my passion but enjoy having a go at most things and couldn't miss the opportunity of trying to capture the blood moon especially as we were blessed with clear skies."

Gareth Pritchard also took pictures of the phenonenum. He said: “I was up at 4.30am and had to stand in the middle of the road to get photographs. I was so transfixed I almost forgot to avoid the traffic that was about. It was stunning. I must have taken about 30 shots.”

Astronomer Brian Woosnam, who writes the Astronomy section for the Pioneer, was also out shooting photographs. He said: “I was really looking forward to this event. I have spent a few weeks hoping that we would not be clouded out which is usual for the UK.

“I got up at 3.30am and had a telescope set up with a flick mirror device at the back of my scope which allows me to view this wonderful sight and also take photos. We were blessed with a clear sky and I was able to capture photo, I actually captured 137.”
