THE people of Glasgow are being invited to celebrate the centenary of one of the city’s favourite supermarket.

Marks and Spencer is marking its 100-year anniversary of serving Glasgow with a Centenary Taste Trail on Argyle Street on Saturday January 26.

The event will profile the best of M&S’s Scottish produce through a four-month food tour of five Scottish locations.

It will be coming to M&S Argyle Street on Saturday January 26 from 10am to 5pm.

Customers and colleagues of past and present will be present at the ‘festival of food’ where they will be treated to free food tastings and a demo kitchen, as well as face painting and shortbread decorating for children.

Scottish M&S producer Macsween of Edinburgh will also be on hand to offer visitors delicious haggis, neeps and tatties.

The very first M&S opened in Dundee in the autumn of 1918, and the second M&S opened in Glasgow at 28 Argyle St. just one year later in 1919.

This new year marks 100 years of M&S in Glasgow – M&S now serves two million customers a week across Scotland and employs 6,500 people.

Kirsty Warwick, Store Manager at M&S Glasgow Argyle Street, said: “We can’t wait to welcome the Centenary Taste Trail to Glasgow. It’s such a great way for both our colleagues and customers to come together and celebrate 100 years of M&S in Scotland and in Glasgow.”

James Macsween, Managing Director at Macsween of Edinburgh, said: "We’ve been making haggis products for over 50 years and started supplying haggis and black pudding to M&S in 2012. It's great to work with a brand that has been serving customers in Scotland for so long. We're looking forward to celebrating their 100th year in Glasgow at the end of the month!"
