WATER is being restored to parts of North and North-West Glasgow, Bearsden and Milngavie after a major outage for most of Tuesday.

Thousands across the city and beyond were left without water after a 36-inch trunk main burst in Bearsden in the afternoon.

Properties were also affected in parts of Partick, Partickhill, Broomhill, Kelvingrove, Kelvindale, Kelvinside, Hyndland, Hillhead, Maryhill, Ruchill, Gilshochill, North Kelvin, Acre, Summerston and Cadder.

The Evening Times previously reported how Milngavie Road looked like something out of a disaster movie Police cars, fire engines, sandbags and water tankers were all out in force along the street.

Families trudged through knee-high water, carrying which belongings they could, their homes ruined.

One resident, whose home was severely flooded in the foundations, had some of his university work lost in the flood. He said: “It’s been a very stressful day.”

Scottish Water said its teams worked through the night to restore supplies for all customers affected.

Just before midnight, repair work was ongoing and Milngavie Road in Bearsden reopened to traffic.

Scottish Water said in an update: “We are committed to helping a number of householders who have been affected by flooding as a result of the burst and are working with agencies to ensure customers receive the support they require. Customer service staff remain on-site.”

Residents may still experience discoloured water following the repair.

If this happens, Scottish Water advises customers to run the cold water tap until the water runs clear.

There may be a very small number of customers with airlocks in their system following the burst that’s preventing water coming through.

If that’s the case, call Scottish Water’s contact centre which will provide advice on 0800 0778 778.

Scottish Water added: “We would like to offer sincere apologies to all those affected by the burst and thank customers for their patience and understanding.”
