The daughter of a council worker killed after being struck by a bin lorry has paid tribute to her 'hero'.

Robert McMillan died following the incident on Mount Cameron Drive North, East Kilbride, on January 17.

His daughter Lauren McMillan has described his death as the “hardest day” of her life.

In a heartfelt post on social media, she said: "My best friend, hero and most of all daddy is gone and knowing I’m never going to see him again is breaking me to pieces.

"Dad I promise I’ll do everything I can to make you stay proud of me, and do everything we planned to do.

"I know that you’ll be ok because now you’re with your dad, helping him look out for me.

"I will miss you daddy. Forever your princess."

The post was flooded with emotional messages of support for Lauren and her family.

One family friend wrote: "Your dad loved you and your mum so much. Treasure your precious memories."

Another added: "Devastating news ,so many child hood memories, noble primary Bellshill academy and going to Ibrox as young boys. Rest in peace Rab."

One well wisher posted: "So sorry for your loss Lauren, I worked with your dad and know he always was and always will be proud of you, he will be sadly missed, thoughts and prayers to all his family GBNF."

As previously reported by the Evening Times, emergency services raced to the scene following the accident but Mr McMillan was pronounced dead on arrival.

Michael McGlynn, Executive Director of Community and Enterprise Resources, said: “We are deeply saddened at the death of our colleague and our sympathies go out to his family, friends and workmates.

"We are providing support to those affected by this tragic incident, and the council will of course assist the police with their enquiries.”
