STAFF at a second Glasgow hospital claim they have complained about pigeon droppings but health bosses failed to act.

The Evening Times was contacted by workers from the New Victoria Hospital who say they have been raising concerns about pigeon mess since the building opened.

Two patients at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital died after receiving treatment for a fungal infection, Cryptococcus, which is linked to pigeon dirt.

Now staff at the South Side hospital claim pigeons have been creating a mess in the underground car park since the building opened in 2009.

They say the mess has been getting increasingly worse with a "significant" problem developing in the past year.

People walk through the dirt and then bring it into the hospital on their shoes, it is claimed.

Despite raising this with management, the pest problem has not been dealt with.

One staff member said: "In the underground car park there is significant pigeon droppings which have remained for the last year.

"Every person who uses this stairwell steps in the droppings and tramples it through the whole hospital.

"No effort has been made to remove the pigeons from the car park."

A second staff member, who also asked not to be named, said they had been raising the issue for several years.

She said: "Hospital management know about this issue because there have been complaints.

"I'm not even sure the health issues were foremost in people's minds.

"It was more about the mess. It's filthy, in several places throughout the car park and it's really not the best welcome to our hospital.

"Not when it's a new building."

However, a spokesman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the issue is now being dealt with following a complaint received on Tuesday.

He said: "Our pest control contractor has been called to respond to a complaint received [on Tuesday] about pigeon droppings in the car park at the New Victoria hospital."
